An application to construct a traditional-style dwelling-house close to the main tower of Dundeady Castle overlooking Rosscarbery Bay in West Cork led to a request for a test excavation to be carried out. The proposed development is located to the immediate south of the tower-house (CO144–03903) and is also in proximity to the bawn wall (CO144–03905) and a possible coastal promontory fort (CO144–03901). This is the second planning application to develop a site on Dundeady Island with permission to construct a dwelling-house close to the south-east mural tower overlooking Dirk Bay being refused in 2007. The test excavation was carried out in those areas of the site that were to be subjected to maximum ground disturbance, including two proposed locations for the dwelling-house, the percolation area and along the route of the driveway. These were excavated to a level below the natural boulder clay and no features or finds of archaeological significance were noted in the investigated areas.
