Two trenches were excavated by a mini-digger in the rear garden of a property in advance of the construction of an extension to an existing dwelling at the east end of Abbey Street. The site is located within the zone of potential for CL045–033, the historic town of Killaloe. The trenches were between 2m and 4m long and were excavated to an average depth of 1m. The stratigraphy consisted generally of a layer of sod overlying a roughly 0.7m depth of dark blackish/brown sandy silt topsoil with brick, slate, modern debris and animal bone inclusions. The topsoil overlay a natural subsoil of light-yellow/brown sandy silt with large sandstones.
