An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the construction of a new educational facility to replace the existing college at the Lisburn Institute of Further and Higher Education, Lisburn, Co. Antrim. Archaeological works were previously carried out across the majority of the site during 2007, under licence no. AE/07/60. Archaeological activity was identified during testing of the Phases 1 and 2 and was subsequently excavated.
A series of 6 test trenches were scheduled to be excavated across this phase of the development using a machine with toothless bucket. Test trench 6 was to be located in the east side of the site, adjacent to a large upstanding wall belong to the adjoining property. This adjoining wall showed signs of slippage and the test trench would have further weakened it. This trench was therefore not excavated in case of further damage being incurred.
During the course of the evaluation, the infill layers excavated in the test trenches showed that the ground level of the site had been raised using reclaimed materials and had been heavily disturbed by modern building foundations. As such no archaeological remains were uncovered.
