The proposed development relates to the upgrading existing wastewater treatment works at Dunmurry in south Belfast and includes areas of open ground to the north, west and south of the current facilities. The site measures approximately 250m west to east by approximately 400m at its longest part and is bounded by the River Lagan to the south and south-east.
There are seven recorded archaeological sites within a 1km radius with one of these sites, a findspot (ANT064–089) being located partially within the boundaries of the proposed development. This findspot consisted of numerous collections of worked flint which have been recovered from the area during field-walking carried out by Peter Woodman and others when the area was undergoing construction and drainage work associated with previous development of the existing treatment works.
Groundworks associated with the upgrading of the treatment works began in September under supervision. Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered.
