The proposed development, for the construction of social housing on behalf of Fold Housing Association, is situated two miles south-west of the historic nucleus of the 17th-century plantation town of Belfast in the now built-up area of Donegall Road. A total of 47 houses and 24 apartments with access roads will be built on the site. The area is the site of the former Ulster Match Works/Chemical Works (IHR 10404:000:00) built in the 1920s. The site was subsequently cleared in the 1980s and a shopping centre and carpark built.
Monitoring of groundworks across the proposed development revealed substantial modern truncations associated with the construction of the shopping centre and subsequent infilling with overburden. No evidence of in situ archaeological deposits was uncovered.
