Monitored topsoil-stripping was carried out at the site of a proposed lorry park extension at a dairy processing facility at Pennybridge Industrial Estate, Ballymena. The monitoring works followed on from a previous evaluation works at the site (Excavations 2009, No. 11, AE/09/081) which identified an area of potential prehistoric occupation within the southern portion of the development boundary. Topsoil-stripping within the area of archaeological activity confirmed the existence of prehistoric occupation in the form of subsoil-cut pits and post-holes. As proposed development plans indicated that ground works would not extend beyond topsoil removal, Farrimond MacManus Ltd, in consultation with NIEA: HMU, agreed to follow a policy of in situ preservation of archaeological remains in accordance with planning policy guidelines.
