Monitoring was undertaken during the refurbishment of a site at 2 South Main Street, Wexford. The refurbishment involved the demolition of a single-storey extension to the rear of a retail premises and the construction of a single-storey extension, as well as the refurbishment of the ground floor of the building. The redevelopment involved the excavation of the rear yard area of the site to create an overall ground floor which is level with South Main Street.
Monitoring in the rear yard discovered that the development of the site in the 19th and 20th centuries had excavated through medieval deposits and into the natural underlying geology in this part of the site. Traces of archaeological stratigraphy and a sherd of medieval pottery were, however, uncovered underneath the rear wall of the site.

A second, ex situ, sherd of medieval pottery uncovered at the street front of the site may have been an indication that fragments of archaeological stratigraphy survive below the limit of excavation in this area.
