The Taghmon Action Group proposed the construction of a new community centre as an extension to the recently completed Community Day Care Centre. Monitoring was carried out over the footprint of the proposed building as part of preliminary groundworks in advance of construction. This work took place on 6 April 2009. Nothing of archaeological significance was exposed during these works.
The remainder of the development site was tested at this time. This work took place between 9 and 14 April. Twelve test-trenches were opened on the southern portion of the site. Archaeological deposits were identified in Trenches 2–4. Testing has determined that the south-western corner of the site, from Trench 1 to Trench 5, an area of c. 50m (west to east) by 30m, is archaeologically sensitive. This area contains evidence for agri-industrial activity and other spreads and deposits which may also be of medieval date. The evidence for agri-industrial activity is mainly defined by the kiln evidence in Trenches 3 and 4. This material must be considered in advance of any further development on this site. Testing has also proved that no further archaeological activity is present beyond the eastern limit of Trench 5.
