Prior to the construction of a surface carpark, test-trenching was undertaken in a small triangular paddock associated with Gorey train station. The site is located c. 200m south of Gorey’s zone of archaeological potential, WX007–033.
A total of ten test-trenches were excavated in a regular grid pattern across the area of proposed development. No features of archaeological potential were noted during the testing exercise. A pair of roughly parallel features of probable agricultural origin were uncovered toward the south-eastern end of the site. The larger of the two features appeared to be the backfilled remnant of a field boundary visible on the first-edition OS map of the area.
