Planning permission was granted for the construction of three dwelling-houses at a site previously tested by Red Tobin (Excavations 2008, No. 1270, 08E0172), which is in the vicinity of an earthwork site. Further to the recommendations of the testing report, it was required by Wexford County Council that groundworks at the site be monitored.
Initial groundworks associated with the construction of the middle of the three houses were not monitored. Following the construction of the middle house and its associated driveway, but prior to the insertion of the septic tank and associated services, the site was inspected to assess the impact of the unmonitored groundworks.
The unmonitored groundworks had been undertaken in an area previously tested and found to be archaeologically sterile. The edges of the topsoil-stripped areas were inspected and a proportion of the topsoil removed from the site was metal-detected. It was concluded that the groundworks were unlikely to have had an impact on any previously unknown archaeological deposits.
It is foreseen that further groundworks at the site will be monitored in 2010.
