Phase 1 of the Waterford flood-alleviation scheme concentrated on the River Suir upstream of its confluence with John’s River and on John’s River to Hardy’s Bridge. Works included replacing the existing railings along the quay (1km) with a transparent floodwall/panel glass system and associated works. The new wall necessitated the excavation of a 1.2–1.5m-deep by c. 4m-wide trench but, as the line of the development coincided with the modern quay frontage, which is largely the result of 19th-century expansion, nothing pre-dating the Victorian era was noted. On Adelphi Quay, mooring posts and chains, a crane pad and cobbled surfaces were recorded, all of which were marked on the 1870 OS map of Waterford and relate to the steam-packets which served Cornwall from this dock. Monitoring works for Phases 1 and 2 continued into 2010.
