Conditional planning permission has been granted by Dungarvan Town Council for the construction of two semi-detached houses at Strandside South, Abbeyside, Dungarvan. The site is close to the remains of the medieval abbey (c. 100m west of the crossing of the medieval church). Testing was carried out on 28 January 2009.
Excavation of the two test-trenches did not identify any evidence of medieval (or earlier) activity on the site. The row of cottages recorded on the 1/10560 OS first-edition map of 1840 appears to be under the road beyond the development, but the midden and shell layers found on site are likely to have accumulated behind them. Sherds of glazed red earthenware (18th–19th century) were the only datable finds recovered from the midden.
