In March 2009, ahead of the construction of a glass box extension at Killenure Castle, Co. Tipperary, two short test-trenches were cut in the proposed footprint. Much of the ground was sheet bedrock, with a shallow cover of soil with 19th-century construction debris. The earliest surviving layer, north of the bedrock slab, appears to be the core of the 18th-century yard. No surfaces, wall stumps or cuts were found that might have been associated with the 17th-century fortified house nearby.
