In March 2009, ahead of the construction of a glass box extension at Killenure Castle, Co. Tipperary, two short test-trenches were cut in the proposed footprint. Much of the ground was sheet bedrock, with a shallow cover of soil with 19th-century construction debris. The earliest surviving layer, north of the bedrock slab, appears to be the core of the 18thcentury yard. No surfaces, wall stumps or cuts were found that might have been associated with the 17thcentury fortified house nearby.
