Monitoring was undertaken on behalf of Bord G$is !ireann at Market Street, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. It was necessitated by the removal of a cast-iron main at Market Street, and its replacement with a 125mm PE pipe and two connections. The works were located at the junction with Emmet Street. The eastern gate of the town wall is recorded in this location, where the town wall crossed Market Street and continued southwards down Emmet Street towards the river. The town walls of Clonmel are a national monument. A trench of c. 8m in length, and varying in width between 1.2m and 1.5m, was excavated. Masonry was evident in both sections of the trench, but more so along the southern side of the trench. The masonry was in a very disturbed state but appeared to represent the truncated remains of a wall. The remains correspond with the known location of the medieval defensive wall of Clonmel.
