Assessment and test-trenching was carried out in November 2009 prior to construction of a house and associated site works at Carrowkeale, Newport, Co. Tipperary. Potential archaeological remains were identified confined to a small area at the south-west of the site. An additional area measuring 100m2 centred on a cluster of ten possible subsoil-cut features was stripped of topsoil. One of these features was tested to ascertain its archaeological potential. This confirmed a pit measuring 0.5m in diameter and 0.35m deep filled with dark silty clay. Given the large area of the site, the developer has undertaken to relocate the proposed dwelling to a part of the site devoid of archaeological remains. It is proposed to preserve the known archaeological remains in situ.
