Moore Marine Ltd was commissioned by Roughan & O’Donovan, Consulting Engineers, to carry out an underwater impact assessment of a proposed pedestrian footbridge adjacent to the existing stone masonry arch bridge previously known as Markievicz Bridge in Sligo. Water flow at the time of the survey was moderate, with visibility of 0.5–1m and a maximum recorded water depth of 0.6m.
The site survey recorded that, although the river had been canalised by high modern riverine walls, it had a relatively flat bed comprised of small and medium angular stones and interspersed gravel. No visible archaeological features were noted but it would appear that this area is of high archaeological potential, having been a thoroughfare and crossing point for hundreds of years. The existing bridge is a protected structure and there are two other protected structures on the riverbank in the immediate vicinity.
