This site is being developed as a Fallen Animal Inspection Unit, garage, access and services. Planning permission was granted subject to testing being carried out in advance of construction. This work was expedited by Christopher Read (Excavations 2008, No. 1050). Four test-trenches were excavated over a two-day period in July 2008. The three trenches dug on the site of the building produced no evidence of archaeological activity. One trench was dug along the length of the proposed access road to the site. This trench revealed nine cut features of various forms. It was recommended that these features be preserved by record during the construction phase of the animal unit. The full nature and extent of the archaeological material at this site was not fully determined at the time of testing.
The licence was transferred to Red Tobin to facilitate the further testing of the features recorded in 2008 and, if required, to proceed to excavate any archaeological remains on the site. This work was carried out on 12–13 March 2009.
The results of the monitoring and testing concluded that the features identified in the 2008 test-trench lie to the west of the access road and remain undisturbed. The route of the access road was fully stripped, features were identified and tested and in all cases proved to be non-archaeological origin.
