Testing was undertaken in November 2009 at the site of a proposed mixed-use development area located on the western shores of Lough Ree and to the northeast of an ecclesiastical complex (RO042–044). There is a recently reconstructed/renovated holy well (RO044–16801) situated immediately outside the eastern boundary of the site. This is dedicated to St Diarmuid and is marked on the 1872 OS map, although not on the earlier or later editions. It is not included in the RMP. In addition, there is a tree located immediately to the north of the well, within the subject development lands, on which ribbons have been tied. This has been included in the SMR as a holy tree (RO044–16802).
A total of 31 trenches of varying lengths and orientations were excavated within the boundaries of the development area and nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered.
