Monitoring of works associated with the Carrickmacross sewerage scheme has been ongoing since March 2008. Full-time monitoring took place along the Magheross Road in 2008 within the area of constraint surrounding MO031–035 (church and graveyard) and MO031–105 (bridge) and on the Castleblayney road within the area of constraint surrounding MO031–032 (ringfort – possible site). In November 2009 monitoring took place at O’Neill Street, Parnell Street and Mullanary Street. No archaeological features, finds or deposits have been found to date but several modern walls and culverts have been recorded. These included a brick-built culvert which opened on to a vaulted chamber found at the junction of Parnell and Mullanary Roads. The feature was interpreted as a dead storm drain and the proposed wastewater pipe was rerouted around it. Awall was found to the east of the vault which wasinterpreted as the foundations of a post-medievalhouse. The works are ongoing and are still subject toa programme of monitoring.
