Pre-development testing was carried out over five days between 19 and 23 October 2009 at a site at Lodge Road, Westport. The proposed development consisted of the construction of 78 dwelling-houses, landscaping, internal access roads and footpaths, connection to all public site services and all ancillary site-development works. Testing was required due to the size of the proposed development area at 11.43 acres. There were no archaeological monuments visible within or in the immediate vicinity of the proposed development site.
The site was located on the north-west side of Lodge Road on the north-eastern outskirts of Westport town and consisted of a number of fields of pasture surrounding a dwelling (which appeared to date to the late 19th/early 20th century) and outhouses, which were not part of the development.
The testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of thirteen trenches located to best cover the development area. The trenches measured from 29m to 179.5m, were 0.85–1.5m wide and 0.2–1.2m deep. Below the topsoil was peat, a concrete structure and natural subsoils. The topsoil contained several modern pottery sherds, a red-brick fragment and a small number of modern glass fragments. A number of land drains were visible, while a modern service pipe crossed one of the trenches. The testing revealed nothing of archaeological significance.
