The proposed development consists of eight fields and is 9.4 acres in size, consisting of mainly rough pastureland, and is very wet and marshy in places. The general topography is one of low-lying wet, flat land interspersed with some higher ground, subdivided into small-and medium-sized fields by field boundaries. Several areas have heavy gorse and bramble growth and one area was inaccessible due to mature/semi-mature woodland with heavy bramble undergrowth.
The testing programme was carried out on 11 and 12 December 2009. A 360°-tracked machine with a 2m-wide bucket was used to open the trenches. In all, 40 trenches were opened across the entire area, varying in length from 5m to 90m. All the trenches were excavated to the subsoil level at a depth of 0.3–0.5m. Finds from the test-trenching programme were limited to 19th-and 20th-century pottery and clay-pipe sherds. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were uncovered in the proposed development area.
