Testing was carried out in the vicinity of three archaeological sites – MA040–025 (enclosure), MA040–054 (earthwork) and MA031–047 (ringfort) – during the course of works for a group water scheme within the townlands of Carrowconeen, Carrowcastle and Rathreedaun. This scheme is located c. 7km to the east of Ballina, Co. Mayo. A policy of intermittent monitoring, along with testing in the vicinity of known sites, was adopted by the client and the initial licence holder, Denis Shine, CRDS, during 2008 (Excavations 2008, No. 887). Towards the end of 2008 the licence was extended and transferred, the policy of intermittent monitoring along the scheme was no longer approved by the client and only testing within the vicinity of known sites was approved. This revised policy on the scheme was also communicated to the National Monuments Service.
The overall project generally involved the laying of c. 15km of selected water main pipelines with high performance polyethylene pipe. Trenches were between 0.3m and 0.4m wide and had a maximum depth of 1.4m. Testing in the vicinity of the three known sites was carried out along existing road verges adjacent to the sites. No archaeological finds or features were uncovered during testing on these sites.
