Moore Marine Services Ltd was commissioned by RSK Group on behalf of SEPIL to carry out monitoring of all invasive groundworks, both on land and in the marine environment, associated with the construction of the Corrib gas pipeline approach and landfall at Broadhaven Bay, Co. Mayo. Monitoring was carried out between 22 April and 1 September 2009.
Monitoring of the marine works was divided into two stages: pipeline trench excavation and trench reinstatement. The trench excavation commenced on 10 May and continued until 23 June 2009. Once completed, there was an eight-day standby period whilst the pipeline was being installed. When the pipeline had been successfully installed, the dredgers excavated the previously dredged material and placed it over the newly created pipeline. This work was undertaken from 2 July until 1 September 2009.
A new component of the marine work which had not been previously carried out was trenching of the completed pipeline in the offshore section. Review of ROV footage of the in situ pipeline was the only monitoring methodology possible for this aspect. No archaeological materials or features were impacted on by these works.
Monitoring of the terrestrial component of the works commenced on 22 April and continued intermittently until 3 May 2009. No archaeological material was impacted on by these works.
