Monitoring was undertaken in March 2009 adjacent to MA030–074/01–04 (abbey, buildings, burials and motte) in Co. Mayo. Ballina Town Council required monitoring of improvement works which involved the removal of a tarred footpath within a small graveyard to the north-west of the ruins of a mid/late 14th-century abbey. The subject area contains more recent burials and a grotto and has public access from the cathedral carpark to the north of the site.
The tarred surface covered an area 10m north–south by 5m and was 10mm in thickness. This material overlay a gravelled surface which was left undisturbed. No finds or features of an archaeological nature were noted during monitoring of the groundworks.
