Moore Marine Services was commissioned by Mary Henry Archaeological Services on behalf of Waterways Ireland to carry out a programme of monitoring associated with the construction of new harbour facilities at Richmond Harbour, Cloondara, Co. Longford. The assessment took place in February 2009. Water flow at the time of the survey was moderate, with visibility of 0.5–1m and a maximum recorded water depth of 2.2m.
The field survey recorded that the northern end of the riparian zone was impacted on by the construction of the harbour and lock walls. To the south, the riverbanks appear to have remained unmolested, retaining their tree-lined and short-cut grass banks. The riverbed throughout the survey area comprised medium gravel with small and medium stones. Neither the visual nor the metal-detection survey recorded the presence of any archaeological materials, deposits or features in the assessment area.
