Three trenches were excavated in the grounds of Shannon Rugby Football Club in advance of the construction of a wastewater-treatment plant (biofilter) and percolation area. Monitoring for a single-storey boiler house and medical room extension on the north-west side of the changing rooms was also undertaken. The site is located within the zone of archaeological potential for LI005–010, a castle and settlement cluster. The trenches were between 0.5m and 1.2m deep and revealed a stratigraphy of modern infill layers, containing modern debris and building rubble overlying an old topsoil layer. The natural subsoil was a mid-reddish-brown clay with moderate root inclusions. The monitoring revealed that the area was previously disturbed with construction of the existing clubhouse; a gravel infill overlay a darkreddish-brown clayey silt which rested on the natural subsoil, a mid-yellowish-brown clay. A number of modern service trenches and pipes were noted in the area. Nothing of an archaeological nature was noted during the test-trenching.
