A limited programme of testing was undertaken at the site of a large mixed-use development, known as Waterford City Quays, in late January. The proposed development lands are situated to the north of the River Suir and are bisected by the east–west boundary between counties Waterford and Kilkenny. Concurrent planning applications for the overall development were made to Waterford City Council and Kilkenny County Council, and the latter required that pre-development testing be undertaken within that part of the site situated within the county. There are no known monuments located within c. 250m of the overall site boundaries and no traces of potential archaeology were noted during previous surface reconnaissance surveys.
A total of nineteen trenches of varying lengths and orientations were excavated, where possible, and nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered.
