Kilkenny County Council requested an archaeological impact assessment in advance of a decision on a planning application for a ^garden pavilion’ extension to Lyrath Estate Hotel, Lyrath, Co. Kilkenny. The assessment comprised a desktop study of the subject site and its surrounds and testing of the proposed development area. Desktop assessment concluded that the subject site was an area of high archaeological potential arising from its location partially within the area of constraint for KK020–027 (castle) and its position inside the 19th-century walled garden of Lyrath House, a protected structure. A further seven archaeological sites are located within c. 500m of the proposed development area.
Testing within the walled garden indicated the area had in recent years been almost completely scarped to the level of substratum and nothing of archaeological interest was noted.
