Monitoring was undertaken at West Street, Callan, on the site of Callan Co-operative. Callan Co-operative Society have obtained planning permission to carry out development works on part of their site. West Street is within the zone of archaeological potential for Callan town. No features or deposits of archaeological provenance were revealed during monitoring, with all layers exposed pertaining to the last century.
The foundation trenches opened on all four sides of the proposed building all stayed within the levelling material beneath a concrete base, just exposing the underlying layer on three sides. During the opening of ground for the pads, the underlying layer was impacted upon and proved to be an earlier deposit of infill, dating to the mid-20th century, mixed with pockets of redeposited natural clay. This was also the case regarding a concrete wall revealed at the location of one of the pads cut into the western foundation and is considered to be associated with this earlier phase of development.
