The development involves the construction of a children’s playground within Clane village centre. Development works include the erection of a suspension bridge, space net, triaction unit and a wet pool area. These works required excavation to a maximum depth of 1m, while all other works required excavation to a maximum depth of 0.6–0.7m. Rubber matting will be laid next to the stream in the northern half of the site to a maximum depth of 0.4m. The remainder of the playground will be built on existing ground levels. The development did not involve any excavation into the walled stream which extends throughout the site.

Fieldwork began by monitoring the excavation of two foundation trenches on either side of a small river towards the southern end of the development area. These revealed topsoil sealing modern made ground. Monitoring of topsoil-stripping over an area measuring c. 45m east–west by 20m revealed topsoil sealing a modern subsoil layer. Approximately 30 foundation pits were excavated for the footings of the playground equipment. Topsoil sealed modern subsoil in all test-pits. No archaeological features or artefacts were revealed in any areas of land-take.
