Test excavations carried out at a proposed development site in the townland of Shanakeale, Castlemaine, Co. Kerry, in 2008 revealed a shallow ditch feature which could not be satisfactorily dated (Excavations 2008, No. 633). The site lies adjacent to KE046–019, classified in the Record of Monuments and Places as a Rath. Further testing at the site was carried out in 2009, and the ditch was found to be a modern drainage feature.
