A series of 45 test excavation trenches, 1m in width and with a 10m spacing, were opened across a proposed development in a working farm situated in the townland of Killehenny near Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. The top sod was first removed by a specialised sod-remover to a depth of 0.05m so that it could be replaced when testing was completed. Several modern drains were uncovered running east–west across the site. The average depth of the topsoil in the trenches was c. 0.3m. This overlay natural material which consisted mainly of a greyish impermeable clay and, less frequently, some yellowish silty material. Nothing of an archaeological nature was discovered.
