Monitoring was undertaken during the installation of a new culvert as part of flood alleviation works adjacent to Kilnalekin Friary at Abbey, Gort, Co. Galway. Kilnalekin Friary and its associated remains are currently under state guardianship and comprise National Monument Number 554. Archaeological work was undertaken under Ministerial Consent C377. The new culvert was installed in sections beginning in the backyard of Houlihan's premises under which the stream runs, crossing the road adjacent to an existing twin culvert and along the edge of a small lane accessing a farm yard with an outfall into the stream approximately 3m down this lane. The excavations comprised a c.2m deep trench which totalled 35m in length, 1.8m depth and 1.8m width. All material removed from the trench comprised backfill associated with the construction of the road and the installation of the original twin culvert at this location. No archaeological material or features were visible within the confines of the trench. A large sample of the material removed was metal detected under licence R196. No material was recovered during this work.
