Testing was carried out at Bullaun, Co. Galway, in March 2009 on behalf of the client Ryan Hanley, in advance of pre-development works for Bullaun group water scheme Bundle 2, Contract 4.7, Galway GWS. The proposed development involves the laying of pipelines for the proposed group water scheme in the townland of Bullaun adjacent to GA097–029 (church and graveyard). The proposed pipeline will be routed along existing roads. The programme of works took one day to complete. The work was carried out by a mechanical excavator using a toothless grading bucket.
Testing involved the mechanical excavation of two 10m long by 0.7m wide trenches at the two locations where the pipeline route extends closest to the church and graveyard. Each trench was excavated to the underlying natural substrate. The two trenches were excavated parallel with the field boundary to the east, directly across the road from the church and graveyard. They were excavated in this area in order to avoid disturbing other underground services located directly outside the church wall to the west. No archaeological deposits were found during the course of the testing programme.
