Monitoring took place on the site of a proposed dry dock and slipway development at Galway Harbour Enterprise Park, Rinmore. The construction of a dry dock and slipway was formed by the excavation and infill of existing material above the high-water mark. The planning permission noted that the facilities were required during the Volvo Ocean Race 2008/2009 for the repair of yachts in situ or as a haul-out facility whereby the yachts would be hauled out by mobile crane and transported to adjacent sites for repair.
The development is located at the south end of Rinmore Point to the south-east of the existing commercial docks. This area has been infilled over the last decade with the area of the proposed slipway and dry dock now consisting of rubble fill. Works on the site commenced in March 2009. The development on the site was concentrated on the excavation and development of the slipway facility. The excavation on site involved the removal of the existing filled material and the insertion of a steel frame and reinforced concrete. No features of archaeological significance were encountered in the course of monitoring.
