Testing was undertaken in advance of the construction of a dwelling-house, garage and associated services at Pollatulugga, Galway. The proposed development is located immediately adjacent to an enclosure. The enclosure is marked on both the first-edition OS map of 1838 and on subsequent editions of the map. On all OS maps the monument is named as Lisnarup. The enclosure is located in the south-east of a field of good-quality pasture which slopes to the south and west. The N6 roadway borders the field in the north while stone walls delimit the east and west of the field. A dwelling-house is located to the immediate east of the field.
The proposal for which planning has been granted has the dwelling-house located c. 12m west of the monument and the access road to run within 10–12m of the north-east corner of the monument. The trench locations for pre-development testing were chosen to investigate the archaeological potential to reposition the dwelling and access roadway within the site. Four trenches were excavated in the course of testing. Testing confirmed that the location of the dwelling-house could be repositioned further north or northwest to ensure that it is 20m from the monument. Testing at the site found that the repositioning of the access roadway and dwelling-house would not impinge on any subsurface archaeological layers or features.
