Testing as part of the advance works on the proposed route of the Metro North light rail project was carried out on behalf of the Railway Procurement Agency. For the purposes of these works the Metro North route was subdivided into fourteen testing areas. Testing Area 7 was located on the footprint of the Seatown Stop and Fosterstown park-and-ride area.
Testing of Area 7 was carried out on 23 September, 14–15 October 2009 and 19 January 2010. A total of seventeen test-trenches were excavated in four fields and two areas of archaeological potential were identified.
Miltonsfield 1
This was an isolated pit measuring 0.64m in width and 0.28m deep filled with heat-shattered stone and charcoal.
Miltonsfield 2
A metalled surface, which possibly represents the remains of a subrectangular building, was identified. Linear features that appear to represent a field system associated with the putative building remains were also noted. No dating evidence was recovered from any of the features but they are thought to be archaeological. The activity was contained within an area of c. 20m north-north-east/south-south-west by 15 m.
