Following on from an assessment, test-trenches and test-pits were excavated along greenfield areas associated with Grange Crescent, the Rehabilitation Centre and Pfizer’s pharmaceutical buildings, Pottery Road, D*n Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. The high quantity and location of services made testing difficult in some areas, particularly in relation to the trench in front of Grange Crescent.
The stratigraphy at the site consisted mainly of sod overlying mid-brown silty clay subsoil overlying a mix of red clays and stony natural clays. There was a large dump located along the northern section of the Rehabilitation Centre in the greenfield areas next to the existing Pottery Road. The large quantities of dump material comprised industrial waste, ash, slag and red brick to a depth of 1.2m+ and is associated with the recent past. Several sherds of broken red/brown local pottery as well as porcelain were uncovered during the testing. This pottery is probably related to the pottery works which were located along the road throughout the 19th and early 20th century.
