Monitoring was required as a condition to a grant of planning. The site is located in the townland of St James, which is located in the centre of the Phoenix Park in an area known locally as the ^Nine Acres’. The site is directly east of the two main lakes that form the centre-point of the old Dublin Zoological Gardens.
The development is located in the current services yard of Dublin Zoo; the proposed ESB substation and new access point are in the southeastern corner of this yard. The ducting will run across the services area. Currently the site consists of a series of modern buildings and a large carpark, as well as a number of concrete pads/building foundations, temporary structures, light sheds and landscaped and flower-bed areas.
There were a total of eight slit-trenches excavated,
all within the services area. No archaeological features were identified and no new areas of archaeological potential were found.
