Two test-trenches were excavated in the area to the north of the former mercantile mariner’s office, which is listed on the Record of Protected Structures (ref. 2527). Basement walls and a brick drain dating to the 19th century were uncovered. The structural remains were built on natural ground which was sealed by modern rubble fill. Natural river gravels were uncovered between 2m and 3m below the present ground level. There was no evidence for any reclamation deposits overlying these river gravels on the test site and it is likely that this part of the site lay on the northern shore of the River Liffey.
