Monitoring of the foundation trenches for the extension showed that the area at the rear of the museum had previously been filled using a greyish-brown silty earth and rubble. Numerous artefacts were recovered from the infill, with the pottery ranging in date from the medieval to modern period. A small piece of millefiori was also recovered from this infill.
