Underwater assessment took place of a 550m stretch of the River Swilly, Oldtown townland, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, as part of the Swilly road and bridges scheme. The river assessment area forms part of a wider EIS survey area for the scheme. Two bridge structures cross the River Swilly within this assessment area. It is anticipated that the first bridge structure will be located at the Dunnes Stores site on the R250 (Oldtown Road), NGR 216614 410885, and that the second structure will cross the River Swilly at ‘Kelly’s Future Link’, NGR 216285 410670.
Systematic visual inspection of the riverbed and the attendant bank structures was undertaken across the river assessment area. No archaeologically significant material, deposits, or structures were encountered as part of the survey.
