A monitoring programme was conducted between June and September 2009 as part of the Environmental Improvement Scheme (Phase 2) in the townland of Corporation, Main Street, Killybegs, Co. Donegal. A small number of subsurface finds dating generally to the 19th and 20th centuries were observed during the excavation of the service trenches for the development. Among the most interesting finds were a possible whetstone and butchered animal bone; these may date to any period, but were found in association with modern ceramics and window glass. The flint finds were unworked. Flint nodules are sometimes washed up on Donegal beaches. Stone culverts observed during the trench excavation are thought to date to the 19th century. The subsurface of Killybegs Main Street has undergone previous disturbance as evidenced by the mixed-up strata observed in the trenches. No undisturbed archaeological features, deposits or layers were identified in any of the trenches.
