Testing was undertaken on the site of a proposed housing development at Carrowmullin, Fahan, Co. Donegal, on 1 and 2 April 2009. The site is located to the west of St John’s house in Fahan village.
A total of nine test-trenches of varying lengths comprising a total length of 405.5m• were excavated across the proposed development site. Seven features of potential archaeological consequence were identified, including four possible pits in Trench 3, one possible cremation pit evidenced by cremated bone in Trench 5, one possible post-hole in Trench 5 and one area of in situ burning in Trench 8. None of these features were excavated during testing. Some prehistoric pottery sherds were recovered from the surface of one of the pits in Trench 3 and a small piece of burnt flint was recovered from topsoil from Trench 8. Further archaeological work will be required prior to proceeding with the proposed development.
