Test-trenching was carried out at the site of the former Lough Swilly Hotel on 12 January 2009. Although the site lies within an archaeologically sensitive area, no archaeological artefacts, deposits or remains were identified during the test-trenching works within the boundaries of the proposed development site.
Features associated with the former use of the buildings which currently occupy the site as a hotel and an area within the northern portion of the site formerly used as a quarry were noted. However, the excavation of one of the trenches did not reveal the natural rock outcrop atop which the hotel was believed to be situated but rather provided for the identification of landscaping works which appear to be associated with the Lough Swilly Hotel. Furthermore, the extant nature of the former hotel building and the large concrete ramp located to its immediate north-west precluded the undertaking of testing within the area of the proposed basement car-parking.
