The development site is located within the south-west extent of the playing fields in Macosquin, Co. Derry, in an archaeologically sensitive area. There are eleven archaeological sites within a 1km radius of the development area, including the Plantation settlement of Macosquin (LDY007–045) and the historical settlement of Macosquin (LDY007–057). The development site is located within the limits of these historic areas therefore groundworks had the potential of impacting on archaeological deposits dating from the Early Christian through to Plantation periods.
The development entailed the construction of a changing room and associated services. At the time of the investigations, the area of the changing rooms was unavailable and so monitoring was limited to the associated service trenches.
Both service trenches were monitored to formation level at 0.6m (max.) below present ground level. Both trenches were bottomed within a modern dump deposit and undisturbed subsoil was not uncovered in either.
