Monitoring associated with the urban renewal works within Derry city centre has been ongoing since 2009 and is still incomplete. The site consists of the public roadway and footpaths of Shipquay Place, Shipquay Street, Guildhall Street, Custom House Street, Waterloo Place, Waterloo Street, Strand Road, William Street, Whitaker Street, Foyle Street,
Chamberlain Street, High Street, Magazine Street and Castle Street and is predominantly located within the 17th-century city walls.
The main results to date are that portions of the 17th-century street or quay surface, comprising large stone setts, were identified within Shipquay Place. However, the layer appears to survive only partially with significant disturbance caused by the laying of a 20th-century concrete layer which underlies much of Guildhall Square and Shipquay Place.
