An assessment including testing of geophysical anomalies was undertaken of a proposed development site at Cahermore Cross, Tineel, Rosscarbery, Co. Cork, at the request of Cork County Council and the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government. The testing was undertaken to target the results of a geophysical survey carried out by Earthsound Archaeological Geophysics. The proposed development consisted of the construction of four houses, an entrance, driveways and associated services. The western portion of the site is partially located within the constraint zone for an anomalous stone group (CO134–067) to the west of the development site. A total of seven test-trenches were excavated on the site in order to target the geophysical anomalies identified in the geophysical survey.
Trenches 1–2 and 4–6 did not show any evidence of archaeological activity. A double-ditched field boundary of 19th-century date was uncovered in Trench 4. A number of archaeological features were uncovered in Trenches 3 and 7, including three pits which produced Bronze Age pottery sherds. Monitoring as well as the preservation in situ of the uncovered archaeological deposits was recommended.
