Monitoring was undertaken at Dineen’s Pit, Garryhesty. The works form part of a wider development undertaken by John A. Woods Ltd, which include developing and operating a sand and gravel pit (48.8ha) involving sand and gravel extraction by mechanical means. The first phase of monitoring was undertaken in September/October 2008.
The underlying bedrock on the site is limestone. Overlying the bedrock are glacial sand and gravel deposits up to 40m in depth. Two pits of archaeological significance were excavated. The first pit measuring 1.3m by 2.2m by 0.49m and contained eleven fills. The fills were thin, distinct, alternating layers of charcoal–rich silt and burnt clay/sand. Burnt bone flecks were visible throughout all the fills. The second pit measured 0.26m by 0.28m by 0.12m and contained just one fill; a charcoal-rich silt.
